Returning to What You Love: Rediscovering My Compass in Construction
For many of us, the journey to fulfillment is often circuitous, filled with detours and distractions. I’ve learned through my own winding path that sometimes, the things we take for granted are those that are central to our happiness and purpose. Today, I want to share a personal story about losing sight of my gift, and how rediscovering it helped me find my way back to not just a profession but a passion that defines me.
From a young age, construction was more than just a job to me—it was my calling. The joy of designing and creating something tangible from mere thoughts and plans was exhilarating. But as time went on, I found myself taking this gift for granted. It seemed so inherent to me, so ever-present, that I mistakenly thought it was just one of many paths I could walk.
Driven by ambitions and the allure of financial success, I ventured away from construction. I pursued what I thought would bring happiness, chasing careers that promised more money, prestige, and societal approval. Yet, with each step away from construction, I found myself feeling less fulfilled, more lost. It was as if I had left behind a part of myself, essential and irreplaceable.
The realization hit me hard one day. I was doing well in my new roles, but I felt a void that no amount of success could fill. It was during this period of reflection that I understood—construction wasn’t just what I did; it was a part of who I am. My ability to design and build wasn’t just a skill, it was a compass that oriented me towards my true north.
I came back to construction not because I had to, but because I needed to. The first time I returned to a construction site after my hiatus, it felt like coming home. Every material, every blueprint was a verse in the poetry I was meant to write. I saw construction for what it truly was—my art, my expression, and my contribution to the world.
Today, I see my gift with new eyes. Construction is my art, and I am an artist at heart. It shapes my purpose and guides my days. I’ve learned that embracing this gift is essential to navigating the complexities of life and career.
To those reading this, my message is simple: never underestimate the value of your natural talents. They are not just part of your career; they are your compass, guiding you through life’s journeys to your ultimate destiny. If you’ve wandered away from your first love, it’s never too late to return. There’s unparalleled joy in doing what you love and sharing your innate gifts with the world.
